Junior lefthander Tyler Joyner, backed up by generous offensive support, fanned eight and handcuffed UAB on four hits as East Carolina (18-8, 3-2 C-USA) sailed to a 12-2 rout of Conference USA foe UAB (17-11, 2-3) Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates jumped on Blazers starter Ben Bullard (2-3) for six runs in the first two innings and coasted the rest of the way to secure victory in the weekend series with one game remaining. On Friday, East Carolina scored nine runs in the final three innings to rally past UAB 11-6.

Senior third baseman Corey Thompson had three hits and a pair of RBIs, sophomore designated hitter Drew Reynolds belted a three-run homer and had four RBIs and senior catcher Zach Wright had two hits and an RBI to propel the Pirates offensively.

Tim Younger managed only one hit but added three runs to the East Carolina cause. The senior second baseman stroked a single and also reached base on an error, a walk and a fielder's choice.

Freshman leftfielder Tyler Mims' two singles accounted for half of the Blazers' hits.

The three-game set between the teams concludes on Sunday (10:30 a.m.).
