Devaris Brunson (6-1,230) heads
into his sophomore year with the Pirates after a true freshman
campaign in which he helped the team in several different roles. The
South Carolina native played all four years of high school football
on the varsity level for Lake City High School. He was rated a
four-star prospect by Scout.com and was selected to play in the
Shrine Bowl his senior year.
Brunson has put up some
impressive numbers in the weight room and will look to compete for
playing time at the inside linebacker position in 2014 after playing
a blocking back role in the Pirate offense last year.
Devaris took time to talk to
Bonesville during East Carolina's media day.
Q: Favorite restaurant in
Greenville?
A: Wings Over Greenville.
Q: Favorite TV show?
A: First 48.
Q: Why do you wear no. 34?
A: I wore it in high school,
it's kind of a tradition for me. My coach gave it to me when I first
played varsity so I decided to stick with it.
Q: What led you to choose East
Carolina over other schools during the recruiting process?
A: It was mainly the
family-type atmosphere. When you're here, you feel right at home.
Q: What expectations do you have
for the upcoming season?
A: I want to be a big role
player on the defense and special teams.
Q: What are your thoughts on the
new uniforms?
A: I love them, they're great.
Q: How excited are you to return
to the defensive side of the ball?
A: Any side is good, but the
defense is where I am.
Q: You had some decent rushing
numbers in high school. Are you disappointed you didn't get any
carries last year?
A: Not really. I was just
filling in a spot where we needed some help it's all good.
Q: What is your favorite memory
from last season?
A: I'd have to say the bowl
game (a
37-20 win over Ohio University in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl)
we had a pretty good time down there.
Q: How excited are you to begin
play in the American Athletic Conference?
A: I'm very excited. It's a
new beginning for us and a great opportunity for us to do some good
things in the conference.
Q: What do you enjoy doing with
your time, besides football?
A: I like to fish on the
weekends.
Q: What is the most difficult
thing about being a collegiate athlete?
A: Managing time.
Q: How would you describe running
out of the tunnel onto the field at Dowdy-Ficklen on game day?
A: It's crazy. I love the fans
 they'll get you riled up.
Q: How would you describe the
leadership style of Ruffin McNeill?
A: He's great. He's a good
man. I don't know why anybody wouldn't love him.
Q: What is your favorite thing
about East Carolina?
A: The coaches, everything is
close, it's a small town and it's a football city.
