East
Carolina, over recent years, has been blessed with a number of extraordinary players. NFL
superstar Chris Johnson redefined the term "elite" within the program
and there will likely be few players, current or future, that might be
mentioned in he same breath as the All-Pro running back. Fortunately for the
Pirates, Dwayne Harris is one such player. The preseason All-Conference USA selection
is one of the most dynamic and dangerous offensive players in the nation and
has the tools and talents to take it to an even higher level this season.
Dwayne was
kind enough to sit down for a chat with Bonesville to share his
insights on the upcoming season.
Q: What can Pirate fans expect from
our offense this year based on what you are seeing on the field through
summer?
A:
They
can expect a lot of scoring from this offense. They can expect a lot passes,
a lot of excitement on the offensive side of the ball. It is going to be
good receiver play and great O-line, good running game… an all around good,
productive offense. Honestly, I cant wait to see it as well.
Q: Why is this offense good for Dwayne
Harris?
A:
We
throw the ball 98% of the time and the more times we throw it, the more
chances I get to catch it and the more yards and opportunities to make plays
that I get.
Q:
Any idea if you will get to play quarterback again this season?
A:
I don’t know yet if I will get any plays at quarterback this year, Coach
hasn’t said anything about it, but I am always open to play new positions or
run new plays… we’ll see. If not, I won’t really miss it — I am a wide
receiver now and I just love getting the ball and making plays and the
position I am in right now will get me the ball.
Q: Share your thoughts on the
quarterback battle going in camp right now?
A:
The
quarterbacks are looking good and you know the job is up for grabs right
now. They don’t know, the coaches don’t know and I don’t know who the
starter is going to be yet, but I know Coach (Lincoln) Riley wants to know
the answer by game week. I think whoever is out there will be good.
Q: Who on the offense do you expect to
be a star/stud this year that wasn’t a star last year?
A:
Michael Bowman, an inside receiver, he is a fast guy and runs great routes.
We have Andrew Bodenheimer and Joe Womack… they're going to play. We got Lance
(Lewis), a JUCO, who is very good and will show a lot of people how good he
is. We have a lot of guys who are going to step in and contribute to this
offense.
Q: Who on this team do you most
respect as a player and why?
A:
The
whole offensive line. Their job is not an easy one. They are dong their
grinding every day and are out there protecting the quarterback so our
offense can go… I really respect the way these guys work.
Q: You are the face of the program.
What has changed for you this season? What is expected of you this season
that was not expected last season?
A:
The
role, obviously has changed to focus on wide receiver. During my years here,
there have always been guys like Chris Johnson, Aundrae Allison, Dominique
Lindsay stepping up in the leadership role and now its my turn to do my
part. It’s my senior year and there are not too many senior receivers and I
know a lot of guys look up to me because I have played a lot of football
here. The coaches want me to go out there and make plays and go out and do
what I do and play up to my ability.
Q: NFL dreaming? Have you entertained
any thoughts of NFL and how does that motivate you?
A:
It is great to know its
there, and that there may be some open doors there. I play hard every day,
try to live up to my abilities and do what I do and play football and not
worry about (the NFL). If I go out and work hard and do what I need to do,
those doors will still be open.
Q.
Do you think that you get the recognition and respect your career at
ECU warrants around the country?
A:
Probably in the conference, people respect me more as a player, but around
the country, I don’t know how much people are aware. I do think that a lot
of people know who I am and respect me as a player, but we will have to see
what I am doing by weeks 4 and 5 if I hope to be recognized (by all).
