HAMPTON, VA Pirates come in more than one stripe and
Richard Morgan is changing his stripes. The longest-serving member of the
East Carolina basketball staff has accepted a position as an
assistant coach in other surroundings yet he will still be a Pirate.
After roaming courtside in Minges Coliseum's Williams Arena
the last five years three on the staff of Bill Herrion and two under
Herrion's predecessor, Joe Dooley Morgan will be rejoining the Hampton
University Pirates program where he gained his first two years of college
coaching experience.
Morgan, an All-ACC selection during his playing days at
Virginia, was an assistant at Hampton before joining Dooley's ECU staff in
1998. He was the only member of that staff retained when Herrion took
command of the program before the 2000-01 season.
Bobby Collins, entering his second season as Hampton's head
coach, cited Morgan's familiarity with the school and his playing and
coaching experiences as factors in naming him to replace departed assistant
Ed Huckaby.
Coach Morgan brings in a wealth of experience and knowledge
of the game, said Collins. Having played in the Atlantic Coast Conference,
he knows what it takes to compete at a high level and that experience is
something he can relate to the players we have here at Hampton.
"Having been here before, he also knows the program and the
system and that familiarity will definitely be a plus.
A native of Salem, VA, and a 1989 graduate of the University
of Virginia, Morgan was an All-ACC selection at guard and led the Cavaliers
to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 1989, before embarking on a career that
included two seasons of professional basketball and four years in high
school coaching.
