ECU extends TV pact with WITN-TV
From staff and ECU reports
East Carolina has had one of the better arrangements in
college sports for having many of its athletic contests televised locally by
a commercial, over-the-airwaves station. Now, a deal has been struck to
continue the arrangement.
ECU and
WITN-TV
(Channel 7) have extended their exclusive television agreement through 2005,
ECU athletics director Mike Hamrick announced on Thursday.
As the "official television station of the Pirates," the NBC
affiliate will retain its rights to air ECU football, basketball, and baseball games,
as well as the Steve Logan and Bill Herrion coaches shows.
In making the announcement, Hamrick praised the role the station played
under the previous contract and took note of the special status ECU has
enjoyed in terms of local appearances on TV.
"... Mike Weeks (WITN President/General Manager) and his staff have done an
outstanding job with their presentation of our student-athletes and
increasing our exposure in eastern North Carolina," he said in a release
from the university. "Not many programs in the
country are fortunate enough to have a relationship such as we have with
WITN."
Since the initial contract was signed in 1998, WITN has aired a minimum
of four football games and three basketball games yearly as part of the
Pirate Sports Television Network package. The four football contests to be
televised in the coming season are to be announced.
The Steve Logan Show will air at 12 noon on Sundays during
football season and The Bill
Herrion Show will be seen weekly in that same time slot during basketball
season.
