Hot-Hitting Lawhorn Earns C-USA
Honor
From ECU Media Relations
GREENVILLE — East Carolina freshman first baseman/outfielder Darryl
Lawhorn has been named this week`s Conference USA Hitter of the Week,
the league office announced Monday.
Lawhorn, a product of New Hanover High in Wilmington, led the Pirates
to wins over Elon, Campbell, and Houston over the past week. In five
games, he batted .588 (10-for-17) with three doubles, one home run,
seven runs scored, and six RBI.
Lawhorn was particularly impressive this past weekend in helping the
Pirates (23-6-1) win two of three games against fifth-ranked Houston.
Lawhorn reached base in each of his first 10 plate appearances against
the Cougars and finished the series 7-for-10, with two doubles, five
RBIs, and four runs scored. His seventh-inning single in Friday`s 5-4
win drove in the tying and game-winning runs. He was 4-for-4 with a walk
in Saturday`s 11-4 win.
He also had a big game last Tuesday against Elon, going 2-for-3 with
a double and a home run, his 13th of the season.
Lawhorn has already tied the ECU freshman record for most home runs
in a season. He leads C-USA in home runs, RBIs (40), and total bases
(102). His .424 batting average and .816 slugging percentage leads the
team.
He is the third Pirate to receive C-USA weekly honors this season.
Senior third baseman Bryant Ward was named Co-Hitter of the Week on
February 18 and junior left-hander Sam Narron won Pitcher-of-the-Week
honors on March 4.
