Hitting Award From ECU Media Relations
Pirate third baseman wielded hot bat in Delaware
series
GREENVILLE — East Carolina senior third baseman Bryant Ward has been
named Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week, the league office announced
Monday.
Ward, a product of Greenville's J.H. Rose High School, had eight hits in
13 at-bats (.615) in the Pirates' season-opening three-game sweep of
visiting Delaware. He had two home runs, six RBI, two stolen bases, and
three runs scored to pace the No. 29 Pirates to a 3-0 start. In the three
games, he had a 1.077 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage.
Ward supplied the game-winning hit, an RBI single, in ECU's 3-2 win in 10
innings on Saturday. He opened the season with a 3-for-3 performance,
including a home run and a single off the Blue Hens' All-America pitcher,
Rich McGuire, in Friday's 10-6 win. He was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run
in Sunday's 9-0 Pirate victory.
Sharing the weekly league award with Ward is Cincinnati's Brad Dorrmann.
John Gorham of South Florida was named C-USA's pitcher of the week.
The Pirates are in their first season as baseball members of Conference
USA. Ward is the first ECU recipient of the league's weekly baseball honor.
Four Pirates won similar honors from the Colonial Athletic Association last
season, including Ward, who was CAA Player of the Week following an
outstanding series against Richmond. He also won the CAA award once as a
sophomore.
East Carolina hosts Virginia Commonwealth in a non-conference game on
Wednesday (4 p.m.) at Harrington Field.
