Gryphon QB on a mission

From Bonesville.net staff reports

Terrell Hudgins, who helped lead Rocky Mount's resurgence in high school football, will come to East Carolina with something to prove.

Hudgins quarterbacked Rocky Mount to its first unbeaten regular season in 40 years in 2004 but was virtually ignored during recruiting by Division I-A college programs — except for the Pirates.

Hudgins, who finished as his school's career leader in passing yards with 5,524, said perhaps he can show some of the school's who passed on him what they missed.

He took a recruiting trip to Division I-AA Elon the weekend of Jan. 15 before committing to the Pirates the following weekend.

Hudgins said he liked the enthusiasm of new ECU coach Skip Holtz and his staff.

"East Carolina is close to home and I know I'm a Division I-A player," Hudgins told the Rocky Mount Telegram. "East Carolina has great coaches and players who feel they can turn the program around. I've seen Coach B.W. Holt turn the program around at Rocky Mount from when things were not so good and hopefully Coach Holtz can do the same thing."

Hudgins was Big East 4-A Conference player of the year after passing for 1,677 yards with 22 touchdowns as a senior with only five interceptions. He also rushed for 393 yards and 14 scores.

One of his best games came in a 42-33 regular season win over Greenville Rose in which Hudgins passed for 215 yards and ran for 145 yards as he personally accounted for five touchdowns. Rose edged Rocky Mount in the third round of the playoffs, leaving the Gryphons with a 12-1 record. The Rampants went on to claim their second straight state 4-A championship.

For his career, Hudgins completed 292 of 587 passes with 61 touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound quarterback had 5,879 total yards and 77 touchdowns.

Hudgins said he could play quarterback, safety or outside linebacker in college, adding that he wants to get on the field early in his college career.

Hudgins was offered a scholarship to ECU after his weekend visit, conferred with his mother and accepted.

Verbal commitments are not binding. National signing day is Feb. 2.
