The harvest wasnt over after all for East Carolinas 2004 football
recruiting class. It turns out that Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium will become the
land of Cotton.
Kernersville Glenn coach Charles Cline confirmed this week that Shrine Bowl
linebacker Quentin Cotton has signed a scholarship with the Pirates.
Cotton had received offers from Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina,
N.C. State, South Carolina and Wake Forest but may not qualify academically
to play as a freshman next season. ECU allows academic non-qualifiers.
Any way you cut it, hell be able to go to ECU, Cline said on Tuesday.
Cotton transferred from High Point Andrews and played one season for a 9-4
team at Glenn, leading the Bobcats in tackles with 120.
He has great quickness and anticipation and hes got closing speed, Cline
said.
The Glenn coach said Cotton, who is 6-feet-4 and 220 pounds, runs 40 yards
in 4.65 seconds.
As a defender he knows where the ball is going and he can accelerate to get
there, Cline said. He has exceptionally long arms and range in pass
coverage.
Cotton, who also plays basketball at Glenn, had an interception in the
Shrine Bowl that helped preserve a 21-12 North Carolina victory. He also has
been selected to play in the East-West N.C. Coaches Association All-Star
game in Greensboro in July.
Hes a very fine young man, Cline said. To come to a school for one year
and be accepted by his teammates says a lot about his unselfishness. A lot
of kids in the limelight are all about me, me, me. Quentin is not like that
one bit. He earned the admiration of his teammates because of the type of
person he is. Hes a very classy young guy.
