A chance to play Division I-A
football outside of his home state and the allure of a 'college town' were a
strong enough combination to prompt an accomplished Florida defensive
lineman to cast his lot with East Carolina.
The St. Petersburg (Fla.)
Times has reported that defensive guard Fred Hicks, who helped Seffner
Armwood to the Class 4-A state championship, decided on the Pirates after
also being recruited by South Florida, Louisville and Ball State.
The 5-foot-11, 275-pound Hicks
wanted to go out of state to play on the college level although three of his
high school teammates are going to South Florida.
“East Carolina was just a good
fit for me,” Hicks said. “It’s far but not too far, and the surrounding town
is kind of built around the college, which I liked.
Hicks made first team 4-A all
state after recording 105 tackles, 11 sacks and two fumble recoveries for
touchdowns during his senior season.
He was a team captain for
three years.
