East Carolina has added the
commitments of three football recruits from the Daytona Beach, Fla., area
who visited campus the weekend of Jan. 17.
Two of the players, back
Travis Williams and defensive lineman Josh Grier, are from Atlantic High.
Offensive lineman Richie Santos of Deltona High has also declared his
intentions to become a Pirate.
Williams (5-feet-11, 175
pounds), who gained notice with a 4.3-second time for 40 yards at the Nike
camp at Florida State, projects as a defensive back although he ran for 856
yards and had 23 catches for 317 yards as a tailback on offense.
Grier (6-3, 315) was second on
his team in tackles with 78. Atlantic, a 3-A program, was 7-3 in 2003.
Grier, who runs 40 yards in 4.9 seconds, occasionally lined up at fullback
or tight end on offense — a scary situation for cornerbacks, according to
Atlantic coach Skip Saunier.
The Pirates were recruiting
against future Conference USA member Central Florida for all three of their
most recent commitments.
Santos (6-6, 290) was
initially recruited by former Central Florida offensive line coach Robert
McFarland. When McFarland joined the ECU staff, he continued to recruit
Santos — for the Pirates. ECU defensive coordinator Jerry Odom was
instrumental in the recruitment of the recently-added trio, seeing them in
the Central Florida All Star game in Orlando and using his influence in the
Sunshine State.
Bonesville.net has reported on
26 ECU commitments — one more than the annual NCAA limit — but some of the
junior college players who have already enrolled will be counted with last
year’s class. Signing date is Wednesday, February 4.
In other recruiting news,
Greenville Rose star running back Andre Brown committed to N.C. State over
North Carolina and Virginia on the Countdown to Signing Day program
Wednesday night on Fox Sports South. It is doubtful Brown will qualify
academically to join the Wolfpack next season.
