ECU Adds JC Safety, Three Prep Stars to
Recruiting Class

East Carolina's known list of football commitments has grown to 22 with
verbal pledges by a junior college defensive back, a pair of Eastern North
Carolina lineman and a speedy Florida athlete/return wizard that they will
become Pirates.
The decision by
Shauntae Hunt, a fleet-footed 6-6,
248-pound defensive tackle from Warren County High School, keeps the
Warrenton pipeline flowing that brought a pair of prominent current Pirates
to Greenville, Richard Alston and Marvin Townes. Virginia and North Carolina
were among the schools in the recruiting picture for Hunt.
Eric Graham, a 6-6, 300-pound offensive
tackle from Richlands, moved to Onslow County from Oklahoma two years ago
and emerged this season as an All-East Central Conference performer for an
11-2 team. Graham also was the Wildcats' long-snapper.
ECU beat out Iowa and Rutgers for the verbal commitment of
Reicko Jones, a 5-9, 165-pound speedster from Palm Beach
Garden, FL's Dwyer High School. Jones, who figures to play in the Pirates'
secondary, returned nine kickoffs for touchdowns during the span of his
junior and senior seasons.
Richard Moton, a rangy 6-4, 190-pound
free safety from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College, could be the
first in the group of new pledges to factor into ECU's early game plan for
the 2002 season. Moton also considered Oklahoma State, Baylor and Houston,
among others, before casting his lot for the Pirates.
Pirate Recruiting
Campaign Concluded? Maybe... Maybe Not...
With a week still remaining before the national signing date, the
commitments bring ECU's recruiting effort close to completion. If the
Pirates accept more commitments, it will most likely be on a very selective
basis from a key player
or two perched high on the prospect lists of a number of schools.
One such target was Goldsboro's Manny Lawson, a defensive end/tight end held
in particularly high regard by ECU coaches, who reportedly committed to N.C.
State on Tuesday but another strategic prospect, perhaps two, may be in
the wings.
In any event, the Pirates' recruiting harvest for 2002, the core of which
came together earlier than in any previous year in memory, appears to have
the potential to mount a reasonable challenge to previous recruiting classes
as East Carolina's best ever by the time college diplomas are awarded five
years from now.
A verbal commitments is not binding but signals a
prospect's intention to ink a formal letter-of-intent on signing day. The NCAA's official signing day for the 2002 recruiting class is February 6.
