East Carolina's available scholarship slots are dwindling with signing day
for football more than two weeks away. The Pirates' list of known
commitments has grown to 18 with decisions by a coveted Richmond County
lineman and a South Florida quarterback to matriculate at ECU.
Richmond County's Eric Terry (6-4, 225) is still a bit short of qualifying
academically, but he possesses the physical tools and speed to become a
force on the defensive front and has apparently impressed Pirate skipper
Steve Logan enough with his prospects for ultimately earning academic
eligibility to gain a scholarship commitment.
Raiders' head coach Ed Emory
confirmed Logan extended the offer to Terry and said the Shrine Bowl selection can be
groomed as either a down-lineman or a rusher-pursuer from the edge.
"He doesn't have an ounce of fat on him," said Emory, who served as ECU's
head coach from 1980-84. "He can put on some weight and play defensive
tackle or he's fast enough to play defensive end."
Richmond County strength coach Paul Hoggard, a football letterman at ECU in
1985-86, reported that Terry benched 315 pounds, squatted 405 and
power-cleaned 310 in last summer's testing, in addition to notching
remarkable speed and agility numbers for a lineman.
East Carolina also received a verbal pledge from James Pinkney (6-3, 190), a
quarterback who earned a spot on the Palm Beach (FL) Post's All-Area team.
Pinkney, who was courted by a number of schools from the Big 12 and Big Ten,
was Palm Beach County's leading passer in the larger high schools
classification with 1,807 yards.
In Pinkney's case, the Pirates' gain was Iowa State's loss. He originally
committed to the Cyclones, according to recruiting analyst Bill Buchalter of
the Orlando Sun-Sentinel.
A verbal commitments is not binding but signals a
prospect's intention to ink a formal letter-of-intent on signing day. The NCAA's official signing day for the 2002 recruiting class is February 6.
Terry and Pinkney are the 17th and 18th known
commitments posted to
Bonesville.net's football recruiting page. For the complete list of
