Duke rounds out prep
football title venues
From an NCHSAA news release
CHAPEL
HILL North Carolina High School Athletic Association executive
director Charlie Adams announced Monday that Duke University has
agreed in principal to host two of the NCHSAA's championship
football games in the expanded, subdivided format.
Duke athletic director Joe Alleva
said, "We are really excited about this great opportunity. It
will be good for the city of Durham, good for Duke University,
and we think it will be good for high school athletes and their
families. Our university administration is excited about this
and we think we can provide a outstanding championship
experience."
"We are very excited about having
another outstanding facility available for our athletes, coaches
and fans," said Adams. "We now will be able to provide the
opportunity for each classification to have games in the
excellent facilities provided by each of the Big Four schools,
and having two games at a site is more manageable for game
operations and all the things that go into hosting a
championship."
The 2002 season was the first one
in the expanded format for all classes, with eight NCHSAA
football championship games, two in each of the four
classifications. The larger schools in each class competed for
the "AA" championship in the classification, while the smaller
schools played for the "A" title.
This year three games were played
at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, three at Kenan Stadium in
Chapel Hill and two at Groves Stadium in Winston-Salem.
With Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium added to the mix, two games
would be played at each of the four venues and the
classifications would rotate through the sites over a four-year
span.
"We are really thrilled about this
and look forward to working out the details," said Adams. "Duke
should be a great partner in this endeavor, as our other host
institutions have been."
The four-site plan would go to the
NCHSAA Board of Directors for its approval in May.
