C-USA presidents pursue deliberate course

From staff and Conference USA reports
Conference USA has adopted a strategy designed to maintain
stability in the face of conference realignment pressures, a statement
released after an electronic hookup of the league's leaders appears to
indicate.
Following what was termed "considerable discussion," the
Wednesday dispatch from the conference's board of directors pointedly noted that the
members reaffirmed a
commitment to adhere to the league's bylaws, which, according to the
announcement, would prohibit any school from withdrawing prior to June 30,
2005.
The C-USA board of directors is comprised of the presidents
and chancellors of the league's member institutions.
Conference commissioner Britton Banowsky expressed his satisfaction
with the outcome of the teleconference and indicated the schools' deliberate
approach to potential developments was the best course for the members as a
group.
“I am very pleased with the support and the direction that
we have received from our membership and their desire to make sure we
address these issues in a strategic and responsible way," said Banowsky.
“While there may be changes on the horizon, we are comfortable knowing that
any future changes will not be effective prior to the 2005-2006 academic
year. Obviously, we will continue to explore ways to strengthen the
Conference and serve the collective best interests of our members.”
The session among the league's presidents apparently avoided
prohibiting explorations and overtures on various levels as
the realignment drama unfolds. According to the carefully-crafted league
statement, "the conference will continue to engage in meaningful and open
communication among its members and other conferences potentially impacted
by any changes that may occur."
