Weekly Pirate Baseball
Notes (04/08/02)
East Carolina extended its winning streak to
nine games with Friday and Saturday wins over No. 5 Houston before
finally falling to the Cougars on Sunday. It was the Pirates' first loss
since being swept at home by Texas Christian the weekend of March 22-24.
True freshman first baseman DARRYL LAWHORN
reached base in each of his first 10 plate appearances in the Houston
series and finished the weekend with a 7-for-10 performance, two
doubles, and five RBIs. His seventh-inning single in Friday night's 5-4
win drove in the game's tying and go-ahead runs.
Lawhorn's solo home run in ECU's 4-0 win over
Elon on April 2 was his 13th of the season, tying the school's record
for homers by a freshman.
Senior third baseman BRYANT WARD is currently
on a nine-game hitting streak, his longest of the season.
True freshman right-hander GREG BUNN recorded
his third save of the past two weeks in Friday night's 5-4 win over
Houston. Bunn has allowed only one run and three hits in 10 relief
appearances this season. He has struck out 14 of 38 batters he has faced
this year and has a 0.96 ERA.
Junior right-hander DAVEY PENNY scattered
seven hits, all singles, while allowing only one earned run and striking
out five over eight innings in ECU's 11-4 Saturday win over Houston.
