Pirate Baseball
Quick Notes (04/01/02)
After hitting a tough stretch of games in
mid-March, East Carolina won five games in a row last week. Included in
that span was a 9-5 win over Old Dominion, a 2-0 win over Campbell, and
a three-game Conference USA sweep on the road at UAB.
In the victory over Campbell, Pirate pitchers
WILL BRINSON and GREG BUNN combined for a two-hit shutout.
During the five-game winning streak, ECU's
pitching staff combined for an ERA of 2.35 while the Pirates as a team
batted .304.
Junior college transfer ADAM STEPHENS has
taken over the starting DH role with his hot bat. Stephens batted .500
(5-for-10) with two doubles and a team-high six RBIs while drawing six
walks during the stretch.
True freshman GREG BUNN, a right-hander, made
a bid to become the team's closer as he recorded two saves during the
week — against Campbell and UAB. Bunn has an ERA of 1.23 through eight
appearances this season.
Senior third baseman BRYANT WARD had three
doubles in the UAB series to move into a tie for third on ECU's career
doubles list (49).
Third baseman DARRYL LAWHORN still has some
of the loftiest slugging numbers by a freshman, not only in C-USA, but
in the nation. He leads the league in total bases (86), home runs (12)
and RBIs (34), while batting .398 (sixth in C-USA). The 12 home runs are
just one shy of the school's single-season record by a freshman.
Lawhorn has also swiped a team-high seven bases.
