Junior infielder Priscilla Velasquez slugged a three-run
homer and senior pitching ace Toni Paisley threw three-hit ball to lead East
Carolina to a stunning 4-1 upset win over Tulsa in the championship game of
the Conference USA Softball Tournament on Saturday in Greenville.
The 5th-seeded Lady Pirates (39-20), serving as tourney
hosts in the ECU Softball Stadium, their well-appointed new home, beat the
odds to claim their second championship in a row and lock in the league's
automatic NCAA Tournament berth. They knocked off No. 4 seed Memphis 5-1 on
Thursday and blanked top seed Houston 1-0 on Friday to reach the title tilt
against the 2nd-seeded Golden Hurricane (43-13).
Velasquez accounted for all of ECU's runs, drawing a
bases-loaded walk in the first inning to complement her base-clearing
round-tripper two innings later.
For the third time in three days, Paisley picked up the
win, improving to 30-11 on the season.
Senior infielder Kelly Chapman put Tulsa on the
scoreboard with a home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Velasquez, with 7 runs batted in over three games, was
named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Joining her on the
ECU-dominated All-Tournament team were Paisley, freshman infielder Alex
Fieldhouse, freshman outfielder Jill Jelnick and freshman utility player
Jordan Lewis.
The Lady Pirates will learn their postseason destination
Sunday night when the NCAA Tournament selection show airs on ESPNU at 10
p.m. Tulsa, Houston, UAB and Memphis will be hoping for at-large
invitations.
The regionals will be conducted Thursday through Sunday,
May 19-22.
