Tennessee women's basketball
coach Pat Summitt has been released from the hospital. She is at home
and will be resuming normal activities, according to a statement on the
Lady Vols website.
On Thursday, June 21, Summitt
was admitted to the hospital because of dehydration. She was treated and
kept under observation overnight.
Munson
may just call Georgia's home games
Larry Munson, the legendary
84-year old radio play-by-play voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, may limit
his descriptions to home games during the 2007 season because of
declining health, according to reports.
Analyst Scott Howard likely
would call the Dawgs' road games in Munson's absence.
SMU
names Longbotham women's tennis coach
Lauren Longbotham has been named
women's tennis coach at Southern Methodist. Longbotham served as interim
head coach during the 2006-07 season. The Mustangs finished 19-5 under
her guidance, their highest winning percentage since 1977.

Season tix going,
going, almost gone at ECU
For the first time in school
history, East Carolina is nearing a sellout of its entire football
season ticket allotment.
With more than 18,000 season
tickets already ordered, ECU now has less than 4,000 season tickets
available with over two months remaining prior to the Pirates' home
opener against UNC-Chapel Hill on Sept. 8.
ECU set an all-time high of
16,318 purchases last year in Skip Holtz' second season guiding the
Pirates, surpassing the previous standard of 16,173 established in 2000.

Rice gets hoops transfer from Texas A&M
Bryan Beasley has left the Texas
A&M basketball team and has transferred to Rice to become a member of
the Owls basketball program. The six-foot guard was redshirted as a
freshman during the 2006-07 season and did not see action.
A 2006 graduate from
Pflugerville High School with a 4.3 GPA, Beasley was the Central Texas
player of the year as he averaged 17.4 points per game. The all-state
selection also played for Team USA at the 2006 Global Games in Dallas.
Coming out of high school
Rivals.com rated Beasley as the state of Texas' top-ranked point guard
and top-150 nationally. Additionally, Texas Hoops ranked him as the
state's ninth-best overall prospect.
Southern
Miss's Reed on Jones Cup team
Southern Miss junior
guard/forward Kendra Reed (Bay St. Louis, MS) has been selected to
represent the United States as a member of the U.S. William Jones Cup
Team which will compete, July 11-17, in Taipei, Taiwan.
Reed will be joined by an
all-star collegiate cast comprised of Rachel Allison and Jhasmin Player
of Baylor, Heather Ezell of Iowa State, Briann January of Arizona State,
Sarah-Jo Lawrence of George Washington, Jackie McFarland of Colorado,
Angie Nelp of Colorado State, La Toya Micheaux of Texas A&M, Leah Rush
of Oklahoma, Brittanie Taylor-James of North Carolina A&T and Katie
Vieth of Kentucky.
Seven members of the 12-player
roster participated in this year's NCAA Tournament.
Last season, Reed averaged 15.3
points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

ISP, Conference USA
announce agreement
ISP Sports is the new corporate
marketing partner for Conference USA after obtaining a significant
portion of the league’s multimedia rights from CSTV.
CSTV, which acquired the rights
in 2005 through a long-term deal with C-USA, will continue to manage the
conference’s television and multimedia broadcast rights and production.
The agreement goes into effect July 1st, 2007, according to an
announcement from ISP.
ISP will be responsible for the
direction of C-USA partnerships with corporate sponsors on both the
regional and national level. Those rights include the management and
marketing of title and presenting sponsorships, all signage, hospitality
and at-event promotions involving C-USA championships, including
football and basketball.
On-site print materials and
other sponsorship opportunities at league championships also will be
available through ISP.
Williams returning to Pirates golf scene
Former East Carolina men's and
women's golf coach Kevin Williams has re-joined the Pirate athletics
department, accepting the position as women's golf coach according to an
announcement from ECU athletic director Athletics Terry Holland.
Williams, who became the Lady
Pirates' first head coach in 2000, returns to his alma mater after
spending the past 18 months as the head golf pro at Walnut Creek Country
Club in Goldsboro.
He replaces Kim Lewellen, who
left ECU to take the women's golf coaching job at Virginia.
Georgia Tech's mascot car takes turn for worse
Georgia Tech's "Ramblin' Wreck"
is in need of some repairs. The vintage car that has led the football
team onto Grant Field before home games since 1961 was wrecked for real
as it was being towed to Savannah to be used in a wedding.
Tech officials said Wednesday
that they hope to get repairs done to the 1930 Model A Sports Coupe in
time for the home opener against Samford.

Quartet from
C-USA involved in World Bowl XV
John Syptak, a two-time all
conference selection during his career at Rice, will be looking to help
the Frankfurt Galaxy win their fifth NFL Europe title in team history
when they meet the Hamburg Sea Devils in World Bowl XV.
The game will be played on
Saturday at Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and
will be broadcast live on the NFL Network.
Former Houston wide receiver
Brandon Middleton is a teammate of Syptak's. The Hamburg active roster
includes offensive tackle Jeremy Parquet of Southern Miss and wide
receiver Josh Davis of Marshall.
Nevada's
wolf has familiar appearance
The Reno Journal-Gazette has
reported that officials from N.C. State and the University of Nevada
will meet this week regarding the similar looks of the schools'
secondary logos. The meeting comes after of an article in the N.C. State
newspaper which pointed out the similarities between "Toughie", the N.C.
State wolf, and a wolf that has been appearing on Nevada merchandise.
Reports state that the two
wolves appear the same except for their color and type of headgear.
Theus
leaves New Mexico State for Kings
New Mexico State coach Reggie
Theus was introduced Wednesday as the new coach of the Sacramento Kings
of the NBA.
Theus had announced just last
Thursday that the Aggies had added Duke to their 2007-08 non-conference
schedule with a game in Durham at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 to be shown on
ESPN2.

Judge's order ousts
Nifong from DA position
A judge has suspended Durham
district attorney Mike Nifong, thwarting the intentions of the
prosecutor disbarred for his handling of the Duke lacrosse rape case to
stay in office for another month and assist in the transition to a
successor.
Superior court judge Orlando
Hudson said the order was based on the probability that Nifong engaged
in willful misconduct in office.

North Carolina starter Luke
Putkonen quieted the rowdy Louisville bats, giving up just three hits
and striking out seven to pick up his eighth win and end Louisville's
NCAA College World Series baseball run with a 3-1 win in Omaha on
Tuesday.
Indiana football coach Hoeppner succumbs
Indiana football coach Terry
Hoeppner, 59, passed away Tuesday morning at 6:50 a.m. at Bloomington
Hospital following a lengthy illness, according to the university's
athletic web site.
"Coach died due to complications
from the brain tumor for which he had been treated surgically and
therapeutically over the past 18 months, " said team physician Dr. Larry
Rink. "His family was at his side."
