MEMPHIS —
John Calipari talked with the Cleveland Cavaliers about their vacant head
coaching job, but the Memphis coach told the NBA team he wasn't interested,
a school spokeswoman said Friday.
The
Cavaliers contacted Calipari directly and did not seek permission from
Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson.
School
spokeswoman Jennifer Rodrigues said Calipari ``told them no,'' when the
Cavaliers asked about his interest in the coaching position.
Calipari
informed Johnson that he had been contacted by Cleveland and said the
Cavaliers requested the meeting and that they talked, but did not discuss
specifics.
``I'm not
a candidate,'' Calipari told The Commercial Appeal. ``We've got a good thing
going and I'm not looking to do anything (else). I'm not going to be there.
That's not happening.''
The
Cavaliers have not commented on any candidates for their openings at coach,
general manger or president.
Calipari
completed his fifth season in Memphis since being fired by the New Jersey
Nets, leading the Tigers to a 22-16 record and the semifinals of the NIT.
'Voice' rallying cycles to support School for Deaf
For the second year in a
row, East Carolina Director of Electronic Media Jeff Charles will
leverage his penchant for motorcycles into helping a good cause.
The second annual “Ride With
The Voice,” benefiting the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, will
be staged Saturday, Aug. 20. Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m.
that day at J&E Harley Davidson in Winterville.
Charles is the longtime
play-by-play voice for ECU football and basketball broadcasts.
Funds raised from the ride
will be used to benefit the athletic teams at the historic Wilson school,
which serves 53 counties. Riders collected over $3,000 in donations for the
school last year.
The convoy of motorcycle
riders will be led by Charles over a route that ultimately will conclude at
Ron Ayers Motorsports in Greenville.
An ECU news releasing
announcing the event noted that donations may be sent to Dave Richmond,
Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, P.O. Drawer 2768, Wilson, NC
27894..
