First-timer UAB among five
C-USA bowl teams
After eight years in college football's
big-time division, UAB has finally earned the reward that had eluded it
until now.
The Blazers accepted an invitation
Sunday to play in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl, the team's first trip to a
postseason bowl. The announcement came in spite of Saturday's 26-21 loss to
Southern Mississippi.
UAB (7-4, 5-3 Conference USA), will
meet an opponent still to be determined.
``This first bowl game for our program
is special, not only for our current players, but also for all the other
guys from past years who played a part in getting us started,'' coach and
athletic director Watson Brown said in a statement.
The Blazers team, who have played at
the Division I-A level since 1996, join four other C-USA teams heading for
postseason destinations.
No. 7 Louisville (9-1, 7-0) will
represent the league against an opponent to be determined in the 46th annual
AutoZone Liberty Bowl on December 31 in Memphis. The Cards clinched the
C-USA championship Saturday with a 70-7 pasting of Cincinnati.
The champion of the Mountain West
Conference would ordinarily be the opponent in the Liberty Bowl, but that
league's top team, unbeaten and 5th-ranked Utah, appears assured of a berth
in a Bowl Championship Series game.
Memphis (8-3, 5-3) will accept an
invitation to play in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Dec. 22. The
university released a statement Sunday that said the Tigers will sign a
contract Monday with the GMAC Bowl.
The Tigers' opponent, a representative
of the Mid-America Conference, will be announced later this week. GMAC Bowl
selection committee chairman Murray Cape said four MAC teams — Toledo,
Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Miami of Ohio — are possible opponents.
Southern Miss will face Sun Belt Conference champion North Texas in the New
Orleans Bowl on Dec. 14. The Golden Eagles (6-4, 5-3) accepted an invitation
to the game after becoming bowl eligible with with their Saturday win over
UAB.
``We're excited to have a regional team
competing this year and it's expected to be a very good draw for Southern
Miss fans,'' said New Orleans Bowl spokesman Sam Joffray.
Only a day after their humiliation at
Louisville, the Cincinnati Bearcats were invited Sunday to play in the Fort
Worth Bowl. The bowl, played on Dec. 23, would normally extend the other
invitation to a Big 12 team, but that league's bowl-eligible schools are
locked locked into other bids already.
Fort Worth Bowl officials are
negotiating with the Atlantic Coast, Big East and Mid-American conferences
for another opponent.
