CINCINNATI — Curtis Withers made a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left to seal Charlotte's first victory in 10 tries in Cincinnati.

Nick Williams tried to tie the game as the buzzer sounded, but his 3-point shot banged off the back of the rim.

Brendan Plavich finished with 17 points for Charlotte (13-5, 5-2 Conference USA), and Withers had 15. Demon Brown and Eddie Basden had 13 apiece, and Martin Iti had 11.

Kareem Johnson led Cincinnati (15-2, 6-2) with 15 points, Tony Bobbitt had 14 and Williams, Eric Hicks and Jason Maxiell all had 11.

Marquette shoots down high-flying Cardinals

LOUISVILLE — Steve Novak made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points, and Marquette beat Louisville in Rick Pitino's first game back with the Cardinals following a two-day medical leave.

Travis Diener added 17 points and seven assists as the Golden Eagles (13-5, 4-3 Conference USA) snapped Louisville's 16-game winning streak. Novak also had eight rebounds.

Marquette also ended Louisville's 16-game winning streak at Freedom Hall, which dated to the Golden Eagles' 78-73 victory here last Feb. 27.

Pitino was as animated as ever on the sideline, three days after returning from a medical leave. He went to the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday to probe the cause of a pain that's persisted in his left side for months, causing him to miss the Cardinals' 64-48 win over Houston on Wednesday. He said tests revealed no serious problems.

Luke Whitehead had 14 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for Louisville (16-2, 6-1).

LSU in market for 2004 opening foe

BATON ROUGE — LSU moved its football game against Mississippi State next season to Sept. 25, senior associate athletic director Dan Radakovich announced earlier this week.

The game, which will be played in Tiger Stadium, was originally scheduled to be played on Oct. 16. The Tigers will now have an open date on Oct. 16.

Radakovich said the Tigers are still looking for an opponent for their 2004 season opening game. LSU was originally scheduled to open next year against Virginia Tech in Baton Rouge, however that game has been pushed back to the 2007 season.
