East Carolina women's soccer has mad notable strides in Conference USA and Penny Perrott has played a significant role in that. Consequently, the Ft. Lauderdale, FL, senior was named C-USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year this week after a vote by the league's 14 coaches.

Perrott, also a first team all-conference selection, becomes the first Lady Pirate to be named Defensive Player of the Year by C-USA in women's soccer. On the season, she helped the Pirates record six shutouts, register 1.14 goals against average, while collecting three goals and five assists. Perrott shares the award with USF's Breck Bankster.

Joining Perrott on the all-conference first team is teammate Meghan McCallion (Long Island, NY). As a sophomore, McCallion led the Pirates in scoring this season with 10 goals, three of which were game-winners.

Gear from celebrity Frogs up for auction

CARLSBAD, CA — Texas Christian fans have until Friday to bid on an autographed LaDainian Tomlinson San Diego Chargers ball as part of the school's ongoing auction at http://gofrogs.ocsn.com/ebay.

Tomlinson, a Pro Bowler after only his second season with the Chargers, was a Heisman Trophy finalist at TCU and holds the NCAA-Division I-A single-game rushing record with 406 yards in one game.

In addition, fans can bid on a Horned Frogs hat autographed by head football coach Gary Patterson.

Proceeds from the auction help support the TCU athletic department. The auction is part of a nationwide program with eBay Sports and OCSN, which partners with TCU and 144 university athletic departments and conferences to manage and maintain Official Athletic Sites.

WAC zebras sanctioned for bad calls

SAN JOSE, CA — Seven Western Athletic Conference referees were suspended Tuesday for one game because of several errors they made during Hawaii's win at San Jose State last weekend.

The WAC officiating crew also won't be considered for any postseason assignments, league assistant commissioner Dave Chaffin said. The result of Saturday's game will not be overturned, the conference said.

Hawaii escaped with a 13-10 victory when San Jose State's Courtney Anderson was tackled at the 1 in the final seconds and the Spartans were unable to get one last play before time expired.

After Anderson was ruled just inches short of the end zone, the officials decided quarterback Scott Rislov had spiked the ball with no time on the clock - despite the 0:01 still showing on the scoreboard.

"There were several officiating errors, the most important one including that time had not expired and San Jose State should have had the opportunity to run one more play," Chaffin said Tuesday.

The suspension came a day after San Jose State officials wrote a letter requesting a review and sent video to the WAC.

Suspensions cloud UCF's day in sun

While Central Florida was gaining positive national attention with its entry into Conference USA, the school's football program was dropping the harsh hammer of discipline on three of its players.

Just one day after UCF suspended star quarterback Ryan Schneider and redshirt freshman center Cedric Gagne-Marcoux for the season, cornerback Omar Laurence was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday.

Knights coach Mike Kruczek said Schneider and Gagne-Marcoux violated team rules.

The length of the suspension for Laurence is pending the resolution of criminal charges and a UCF student conduct investigation.

Laurence has played in all nine games for the Golden Knights (3-6, 2-3 Mid- American Conference) this season, recording 56 tackles.

Schneider, a senior, ranks third among active NCAA quarterbacks with 82 career touchdown passes, trailing only North Carolina State's Philip Rivers (86) and Louisiana Tech's Luke McCown (83). He completed 194 of 281 passes this season for 1,949 yards and 13 touchdowns.

His 10,976 yards passing rank 12th in NCAA history, and his 82 touchdown passes rank 14th. Schneider finished second behind Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper in four categories in the school's record book: completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns.
