East Carolina has turned to a
name recognized throughout the college sports world for guidance in filling
one of its most important administrative positions.
Former Big Eight Conference
commissioner Charles "Chuck" Neinas has been selected as a consultant to
assist in ECU's search for an athletics director. Neinas will meet with a
task force involved in the AD search at a site near Raleigh-Durham
International Airport on Thursday.
Neinas, who is based in
Boulder, Col., is president of Neinas Sports Services. He also has served as
executive director of the College Football Association and assistant
executive director of the NCAA.
ECU chancellor Steve Ballard
said in a statement released by the university on Monday that the task force
which helped make the selection after
interviewing several consultant groups
was enthusiastic and positive about Neinas.
"We expect Chuck Neinas to
enhance our ability to attract strong candidates from across the country,"
Ballard said. "Not only does he bring a wealth of experience and contacts to
the table, but he also brings absolute integrity to his work."
Nick Floyd has stabilized what
had become a rocky ride for the Pirate sports ship while serving as ECU's
athletics director on an interim basis for almost a year.
Mike Hamrick, the school's
former AD, made a parallel career move to Nevada-Las Vegas last August on
the heels of a series of controversial actions that eroded his support among
key ECU constituencies.
