East Carolina’s most recent basketball signee has a familiar last name, Hammonds. Tom Hammonds' father — of the same name — was an outstanding player at Georgia Tech and went on to perform in the NBA.

“Obviously, he has great bloodlines,” said Pirates coach Bill Herrion of his newest recruit.

The younger Hammonds, a 6-foot-4 wing player, averaged about 12 points per game last season in a talented program at Montrose Christian Academy in Rockvillle, Md., where he was coached by Stu Vetter.

Hammonds is from Clearview, Fla., but played at Montrose Christian last year to refine his skills under Vetter and get more exposure.
