After
four standout seasons and
more catches than anyone in

has become an overnight
sensation. It happened last
month at the Senior Bowl in
Mobile, AL, where those who
never took the time to
notice or appreciate the
now- former ECU wide
receiver finally got the
chance to see what they’ve
been missing. ...

TULSA, OK —
Host Tulsa took a 69-58 American Athletic Conference win over East
Carolina on Wednesday night.
The Pirates got 15
points from Terry Whisnant, 14 from Caleb White and 13 from freshman
B.J. Tyson in falling to 11-15 overall and 4-9 in league play.
The Golden Hurricane
(18-7, 11-2) went ahead to stay on a 3-pointer by Rashad Ray that
provided a 13-11 lead with 12:50 remaining in the first half.
Tulsa extended the
advantage to double figures when James Woodard made three free
throws for a 25-13 lead with 4:38 to go in the opening period.
Woodard led the Golden
Hurricane with 19 points. He scored 11 in the first half as Tulsa
was on top 35-19 at the break.
The largest lead was 21
points in the second half after a layup by Ray put Tulsa up 58-37
with 8:22 left.
Brandon Swannegan scored
16 points. Shaquille Harrison added 12 points with eight rebounds
and six assists for Tulsa, which shot 51 percent from the floor.
The Pirates closed the
game on a 12-4 run.
Tulsa had been preparing
for ECU since a 70-45 loss at Connecticut on Feb. 12.
The Golden Hurricane
held off the Pirates 66-64
in Greenville on Jan. 24.
"Tulsa played a better
game tonight," said ECU coach Jeff Lebo. "We let them get 14
second-chance points. We knew Woodard would come out and play
aggressive after not scoring in the UConn game, but he was good
tonight in 38 minutes. It was the difference. He was the best player
on the floor."
Lebo felt the Pirates
were a little sluggish at the outset after their flight on Tuesday.
ECU had 11 of its 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
"We were slow, we didn't
shoot it very well, and we turned it over," said the Pirates coach.
"You are going to be slow out of the gates when you have 11
turnovers. We also missed multiple shots at the front of the rim,
layups. Our big guys had trouble finishing in there. We got nothing
easy in the first half."
After making seven of 24
field goal attempts (29.2 percent) in the first half, ECU dropped 13
of 33 tries (39.4 percent) in the second half.
The Pirates sank 23 of
51 shots (41.1 percent) in the matchup with Tulsa in Greenville.
"They played at home and
they shot the ball really well in the first game," noted Golden
Hurricane coach Frank Haith after the second meeting. "Terry
Whisnant, I think he had 22. I think they made 12 threes. They were
aggressive. Their zone was good. But I thought we attacked the zone
better tonight. There is no question. Obviously, having that time
off and practicing, I thought our guys knew what we were looking
for. We knew how to attack it and execution was better."
Michel-Ofik Nzege had
seven rebounds for ECU as Tulsa held a 34-30 edge on the boards.
White had three assists. Antonio Robinson and Paris Roberts-Campbell
each had three steals for the Pirates.
ECU returns to Williams
Arena at Minges Coliseum for an 11 a.m. tipoff Saturday against
South Florida (ESPNU). USF (8-19, 2-12) is coming off a 69-67 home
win over Houston on Tuesday night.
The Bulls
defeated the Pirates 58-50
in Tampa on Jan. 3.
