KINGSTON, RI — East Carolina withstood a UNC-Asheville comeback to finish the NIT Tipoff Tournament with an 81-70 consolation win over the Bulldogs in the University of Rhode Island's Thomas M. Ryan Center on Tuesday evening.

A 20-point effort from Paris Roberts-Campbell led five Pirates into double-figure scoring as ECU improved to 6-1 going into a 5 p.m. home game with UNC-Wilmington (4-4) on Sunday (WITN-TV).

Coincidentally, Seahawks coach Buzz Peterson added former UNCA coach Eddie Biedenbach to his staff during this past offseason.

A three by Akeem Richmond put ECU ahead to stay at 3-2 and the Pirates pushed the lead to 23-9 on a Roberts-Campbell jumper with 10:58 remaining in the first half.

A three by Roberts-Campbell gave the Pirates their biggest advantage at 72-52 with 4:05 left to play. The Bulldogs (1-6) rallied within seven points in the final minute.

ECU dropped nine of 12 free throws over the last 1:11.

Roberts-Campbell made eight of 12 field goal attempts, including four of six from three-point range.

Prince Williams had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for ECU.

Tallying 10 points apiece for the Pirates were Michael Zangari, Richmond and freshman Caleb White.

Freshman Brandan Stith had seven points and a team-high eight rebounds as ECU led 47-33 on the boards.

Sam Hughes scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs' scoring. Andrew Rowsey had 16 points in the setback.
