Corvonn Gaines took a deft feed from fellow senior guard Miguel Paul and smoothly nailed a three-pointer just before the clock ran out in overtime to secure an 88-85 Conference USA victory for East Carolina over Central Florida Saturday night in Greenville.

The climactic shot, Gaines' only field goal attempt of the night, appended an exclamation point onto a dramatic ECU rally over the final 11 minutes of regulation that wiped out a 17-point deficit and forced the extra frame.

Paul, senior forward Maurice Kemp, junior forward Ty Armstrong and senior guard Shamarr Bowden each scored 16 points and junior forward Robert Sampson added 11 as the Pirates mounted a balanced but erratic offensive attack that heated up in the game's latter stages when it mattered most.

Paul distributed 11 assists and Sampson grabbed 10 rebounds to record double-doubles.

The outcome dulled the luster on stellar performances by the UCF frontcourt duo of senior Keith Clanton and junior Tristan Spulock. The burly Clanton was virtually unstoppable around the paint and had a career-high 36 points, while Spurlock produced 23 points and had 11 rebounds.

The Golden Knights (11-5, 1-1 C-USA) led at the half 36-27 and built their biggest advantage of the game, 59-42, with 11:33 remaining. The Pirates (10-5, 1-1) outscored UCF 34-17 down the stretch to stay alive at the the end of regulation.

In the overtime period, the teams were tied three times and swapped leads on three occasions before Gaines' dagger established the lead that stuck.

ECU remains at home for a matchup with C-USA foe Houston on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Cougars (11-3, 1-1) come into the matchup off a 73-54 league loss at Southern Mississippi on Saturday.
