Diminutive senior guard
Zavier Anderson played the role of a giant for one minute Wednesday
night, hitting the boards and factoring into six quick points to
extinguish a late East Carolina surge and propel Clemson to a 71-59 home
victory.
After the Pirates
closed a 14-point deficit to five with little more than five minutes
remaining, Anderson, a 5-9 former walk-on, snatched a pair of offensive
rebounds in short order, tipped one back in for a basket, dished an
assist for a dunk by sophomore forward Milton Jennings and nailed two
free throws to give the Tigers breathing room at 64-53.
Clemson senior center
Jerai Grant was dominant, scoring 18 points and blocking 8 shots. The
Tigers (10-4) got 13 points from Jennings and 11 from junior guard Andre
Young.
Senior guard Brock Young
scored 14 points, senior guard Jontae Sherrod added 13 and junior
forward Darrius Morrow had 12 for East Carolina (7-6).
Clemson led at the half
35-28.
The Pirates complete their
non-conference schedule on Monday at North Carolina Central before
concluding a challenging five-game road stretch with a matchup at
perennial Conference USA heavyweight Memphis on Saturday, Jan. 8th.
