Editor's note: Updated to
correctly attribute the name of the player, Bryan Bynes, who made the
winning shot.
East Carolina overcame an
11-point second half deficit to take a 3-point lead with 1:43 to go but
George Washington countered with an 8-3 surge of its own as the clock
wound down to defeat the Pirates 82-80 Wednesday night in Washington,
DC.
Sophomore guard Bryan
Bynes' jumper with 2.5 seconds left provided the winning margin in a game over
which the Colonials seemed to have seized control early in the second
half after a Taylor jumper with 15:23 remaining gave George Washington
(5-5) a 50-39 working cushion.
A jumper by junior forward
Darrius Morrow at the 15:04 mark followed by a pair of quick baskets and
a free throw by senior center Chad Wynn ignited a 16-4 run that pushed
the Pirates ahead 55-54 with 11:54 left. The momentum swung back and
forth the rest of the way until Taylor sealed the outcome on the
Colonials' last possession.
Junior guard Tony Taylor scored a game-high
and career-high 26 points, sophomore forward Dwayne Smith had 20 and
senior center Joseph Katuka added 17 to pace the George Washington
offensive attack.
East Carolina (7-5) was
led by senior guard Jontae Sherrod's 21 points. Sherrod made 8 of 13
field goal attempts, 5 of 8 from 3-point range.
Morrow scored 12 points on
a perfect 5 of 5 from the floor and 2 of 2 from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Corvonn Gaines had 12 points and senior forward Jamar
Abrams contributed 10 for the Pirates.
Both teams shot better the
50 percent from the field. East Carolina won the rebounding battle 32-31
but the Colonials had the advantage in turnovers, taking away 15 while
giving up only 11.
George Washington, a
member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, led at the half 37-33.
The Pirates will be idle
through Christmas. They face their third in a string of five straight road games
next Wednesday with a challenging matchup at Clemson.
