Senior guard Jontae
Sherrod scored 17 points and senior forward Jamar Abrams matched his
season high with 16 to lead East Carolina to a 75-67 victory over South
Carolina-Upstate in a Sunday consolation game in the Charleston (SC)
Classic.
The Spartans (0-5) are
coached by former East Carolina coach Eddie Payne, who led the Pirates
to their last NCAA tournament berth in 1993.
A 10-3 run by the Pirates
over the final 3:37 of the first half transformed a 6-point deficit into
a 31-30 halftime advantage.
East Carolina (3-2)
carried the momentum over to the second half, outscoring the Spartans
16-7 in the first 4:39 to build a 45-35 lead.
Sherrod made only 1 of 5
field goal attempts but converted 15 of 17 opportunities from the foul
line.
Sophomore guard Corvonn
Gaines contributed 10 points for the Pirates.
Freshman forward Torrey
Craig was USC-Upstate's only double-figure scorer with 19.
Georgetown thumped North
Carolina State 82-67 Sunday night in the championship game of the
eight-team tournament.
East Carolina returns home
for a five-game home stand that starts Wednesday (7 p.m.) with a visit
by Lenoir-Rhyne.
