Senior forward Shamari
Spears scored a game-high 15 points and spearheaded a Charlotte run in the middle of the second half to
break open a nip-and-tuck game as the 49ers defeated East Carolina 74-63 Friday
night in a losers' bracket game in the Charleston (SC) Classic.
Spears ignited the 13-4
run with three straight baskets and added a pair of free throws during
the surge to help the 49ers extend a 47-46 lead at the 12:57 mark to
60-50 with 8:40 remaining.
Charlotte also got double
figures from junior guard Derrio Green (14), sophomore guard Jamar
Briscoe (12), senior forward An'Juan Wilderness (11) and sophomore
forward Chris Braswell (11).
Junior forward Darrius
Morrow had 13 points and 10 rebounds for East Carolina, which had no
other players in double figures.
The Pirates, who
fell
to N.C. State in a first-round matchup on Thursday night,
have a final chance to pick up a win in the tournament when they face
USC-Upstate on Sunday (11:30 a.m.; TV: MASN). The Spartans are coached
by former ECU coach Eddie Payne.
