Senior forward Jamar
Abrams scored 25 points, senior guard Jontae Sherrod exploded for 21,
all in the second half, and junior forward Darrius Morrow had 19 points
and 9 rebounds to lead East Carolina to an 83-76 Conference USA win over
Texas-El Paso Wednesday night in Greenville.
UTEP (20-8, 8-5 C-USA)
needed a victory to move into a four-way logjam atop the league
standings with Memphis, Southern Miss and UAB.
Instead, the foul-prone
Miners tumbled a game behind the leaders as the Pirates (14-13, 6-7)
converted 35 free throws and led most of the game, including the entire
second half.
East Carolina went to the
line 45 times — and UTEP paid the price on the scoreboard and the bench.
Miners head coach Tim Floyd and assistant Phil Johnson were each
whistled for two technicals and ejected in the first two minutes after
intermission.
The Pirates made 30 of 37
second half free throw chances with Sherrod canning 15 of them.
Abrams made 8 of 11 field
goals attempts, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, in producing his
season-high offensive output.
ECU senior guard Brock
Young contributed 11 points and Morrow was the Pirates' top rebounder
with 9.
Senior guard Randy
Culpepper scored 22 points, junior forward Gabriel McCulley had 17,
senior guard Christian Polk added 14 and senior guard Julyan Stone had
11 for UTEP.
East Carolina managed a
29-27 halftime lead and built the advantage to as much as 12 in the
first four minutes of the second half as officials sent a parade of
Pirates to the free throw line.
The victory was East
Carolina's sixth league win, the most the program has recorded since
joining C-USA in the 2001-02 season.
ECU can lock in the
assurance that it will avoid a losing regular season for the first time
in 10 years with a win at Rice on Saturday. The 8 p.m. matchup will be
televised by WITN-TV 7 and Comcast Sports Southeast.
The Pirates host Memphis
for Senior Night next Wednesday (7 p.m.) and conclude the regular season
the following Saturday at UAB (8 p.m.)
Two ECU wins during the
three-game stretch run will produce the school's first winning
basketball season since 1996-97.
