Senior forward Gary Flowers scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Southern Mississippi to an impressive 72-55 Conference USA victory over East Carolina Saturday evening in Hattiesburg.

In postgame quotes on the USM athletic department's Web site, Golden Eagles coach Larry Eustachy called the win "probably the best overall performance that we have had all year. ... This is probably the most pleased that I've been with our team all year."

The Pirates (13-13, 5-7 C-USA) didn't have an answer for Flowers, who was 13 of 20 from the field. He scored 21 of his points in the first half, helping the Golden Eagles (20-6, 9-4) claw to a hard-fought 36-30 halftime lead.

Southern Miss pulled away after intermission, building its advantage to as much as 20 points on two occasions.

Senior guards Brock Young and Jontae Sherrod scored 18 and 12 points, respectively, for East Carolina.

Junior guard Maurice Bolden, who had 11 points, was the only Golden Eagle other than Flowers in double-figures.

Southern Miss out-rebounded the Pirates 41-29.

The victory secured the Golden Eagles' second 20-win season in a row and kept them within striking distance of league-leading Texas-El Paso.

East Carolina will try to halt a three-game skid and keep a winning season within reach when it hosts UTEP on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Senior guard Randy Culpepper scored 33 points to propel the Miners (20-6, 8-3) into sole possession of first place — half a game ahead of USM and UAB — with a 76-64 win over Houston on Saturday.
