A game that was
competitive well into the second half became a blowout as Tulsa used a
big surge to take command down the stretch and coast to an 86-67
Conference USA victory over visiting East Carolina Wednesday night.
The Golden Hurricane
(14-11, 7-4 C-USA) appeared vulnerable with an 8-point margin until a
three-pointer by freshman reserve guard Jordan Clarkson set off a 31-10
run over a 7-minute span that expanded the lead to 29, at 86-57, with
3:24 remaining.
The rest of the contest
was a mop-up job as Tulsa substituted liberally.
Senior guard Justin Hurtt
scored 21 points, sophomore Scottie Haralson had 18 and Clarkson added
17 for the Golden Hurricane.
Senior guard Jontae
Sherrod, with 11 points, and junior forward Darrius Morrow, with 10,
were the only Pirates to reach double figures.
The Golden Hurricane
scored the game's first basket, a layup by junior center Steven Idlet 18
seconds after tipoff, and led from start to finish.
But the Pirates (13-12,
5-6) always remained within one big momentum shift of turning the tide
until the explosion ignited by Tulsa's Clarkson.
The Golden Hurricane led
at the half 36-29.
The Pirates continue
their road swing with a league matchup on Saturday at Southern Miss. The
Golden Eagles (19-6, 8-4) wiped out a 13-point second half deficit and
raced away from Texas-El Paso 64-51 Wednesday night in Hattiesburg.
