Pirates ride rapid rally
to victory over Cougars

Brock Young's
three-pointer with 3:53 remaining set off a 14-0 explosion by East
Carolina that vanquished Houston's game-long lead and propelled the
Pirates on their way to a 74-70 Conference USA win over the Cougars
Saturday night in Greenville.
Houston led by as much as
13 in the middle of the second half and held a 9-point advantage when
Young's trey started the ECU avalanche. The senior guard from Raleigh
finished the blitz with a pair of free throws that put the Pirates in
front 71-66 with 19 seconds left.
Houston then threatened
with a pair of free throws by senior guard Adam Brown at the 13-second
mark and a layup by freshman forward Alandise Harris with 5 ticks left.
But East Carolina (12-9,
4-3 C-USA) countered with three points from the charity stripe — one
from senior guard Jontae Sherrod and two more from Young — to seal the
win.
Sherrod scored a game-high
20 points, junior forward Darrius Morrow had 18, sophomore guard Corvonn
Gaines added 13 and Young finished with 11, all in the second half.
Forward Maurice McNeil led
the Cougars with 18, Harris scored 16, Brown added 12 and guard Zamal
Nixon contributed 10.
Houston (11-9, 3-4) led at
the half 35-28.
The crowd of 6,308
represented the Pirates' largest home attendance since 2008.
East Carolina goes on the
road next to face league foe Southern Methodist on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
