Angelo Johnson's offensive
timing was impeccable Wednesday night. The junior guard's only two field
goals came on consecutive second half possessions and were both
three-pointers, giving Southern Miss the momentum it needed to manage an
84-77 Conference USA win over East Carolina in Greenville.
The teams had swapped
leads for three-fourths of the game when Johnson's first trey with 10:05
left knotted the score at 53. After his second long-range basket, which
came 38 seconds later off an ECU turnover, the Pirates didn't regain the
lead again.
Six Golden Eagles finished
in double figures with senior forward Gary Flowers leading the way with
17 points. Senior guard Sai'Quon Stone and freshman guard D.J. Newbill
each had 13 and junior guard Maurice Bolden and senior guard R.L. Horton
scored 11 apiece. Johnson supplemented his three-pointers by going 4-4
from the free throw line to finish with 10 points.
Junior forward Darrius
Morrow paced five East Carolina players in double figures with 18
points. Senior guard Jontae Sherrod scored 16, senior guard Brock Young
had 13, sophomore guard Corvonn Gaines added 12 and senior forward Jamar
Abrams contributed 10.
The Golden Eagles eked out
a 37-35 halftime advantage in a see-saw battle that involved 11 lead
changes and 10 ties.
Both teams were deadly
from the floor with Southern Miss making 55.1 percent of its field goal
attempts and the Pirates converting 51.2 percent. But the Golden Eagles
were more accurate from behind the arc, knocking down 54.5 percent to
ECU's 30 percent.
Southern Miss (15-5, 4-3
C-USA) won the battle of the backboards 30-22.
East Carolina (11-9, 3-3)
remains at home for a league clash with Houston on Saturday at 6 p.m.
(TV: WITN/CSS).
