Freshman guard Chris Crawford's steal with 2.5 seconds left short-circuited East Carolina's attempt to set up for a tying 3-pointer and preserved a 61-58 Conference USA victory for Memphis on Saturday at FedExForum.

A second half comeback put the Pirates (8-7, 0-1 C-USA) in position to joust for a monumental upset until Crawford's theft cut off ECU's chances to gain its first-ever win over the Tigers (12-3, 1-0).

Junior forward Darrius Morrow scored a game-high 17 points, senior forward forward Jamar Abrams had 15 and senior guard Brock Young added 10 for East Carolina.

Freshman forward Tarik Black with 12 points and senior forward Will Coleman with 11 were the only players in double figures for Memphis.

The Tigers led 33-21 at the half but saw their chances for a rout melt away in the second frame. The Pirates used a barrage of three-pointers to rally, then applied a sticky defense to prevent the nation's 21st-ranked team from scoring a field goal in the game's final five minutes-plus.

A pair of free throws and a 3-pointer in a 53-second span by East Carolina senior guard Brock Young knotted the score at 49-49 with 7:59 left, setting the stage for a battle for momentum down the stretch.

The teams were tied on three subsequent occasions and the Pirates twice managed brief one-point leads until junior forward Wesley Witherspoon nailed a pair of free throws to put Memphis ahead for good 58-56.

East Carolina continues its C-USA campaign on Wednesday when it hosts UAB at 7 p.m. The matchup will mark the Pirates' first home game in over a month.
