VCU fights off Pirates

A three-pointer with 2:29 left by junior guard Brandon Rozzell nudged Virginia Commonwealth into the lead and launched a 9-0 run that secured the Rams' 82-74 victory over East Carolina Tuesday night in Richmond.

The outcome spoiled the homecoming of East Carolina junior forward Jamar Abrams. The alum of Richmond's Highland Springs High School scored a career-high and game-high 26 points, making 10 of 15 from the field and 5 of 8 from three-point range.

Junior center Chad Wynn had a season-high 17 points and junior point guard Brock Young added 16 for the Pirates.

Junior forward Larry Sanders scored a career-high 23 points, junior guard Joey Rodriguez added a season-high 19 and Rozzell had 15 for Virginia Commonwealth.

The Rams led at the half 44-42.

The Pirates conclude their non-conference slate on Sunday in a 3 p.m. home game against North Carolina Central. They open Conference USA play on on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at UAB (8 p.m.)
