It was a milestone night
for the Campbell basketball program as the Camels hosted East Carolina
in Buies Creek for the first time in more than half a century, ended an
eight-game losing streak to the Pirates and shattered an attendance mark
in the process.
Sophomore guard Lorne
Merthie scored 17 points, senior forward Jonathan Rodriquez had 13
points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Kyle Vejraska came off the
bench for 12 points to lead Campbell to a 74-68 victory in the schools'
first meeting on the Camels' home court since the 1946-47 season.
Junior guard Brock Young
scored 19 points, junior guard Jontae Sherrod added 13 and sophomore
forward Darrius Morrow contributed 12 for East Carolina, which fell to
1-2 heading into its participation beginning Saturday in the Paradise
Jam tournament.
Turnovers played a role in
the outcome with Campbell recording 20 takeaways while committing only
11 miscues.
East Carolina led 37-36 at
the half and swapped leads with the Camels for much of the second half.
A Merthie three-pointer with 2:54 left pushed Campbell (2-0) ahead 66-64
and ignited an 11-2 run that sealed the Camels' victory before a record
crowd of 2,778 in Gore Arena at the Pope Convocation Center.
The Pirates (2-1) will
take to the air later this week for the Caribbean where they will face
10th-ranked Tennessee on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the first round of the
eight-team Paradise Jam. The tournament is played at the University of
the Virgin Islands' Sports and Fitness Center in St. Thomas.
