Pirates 'Wynn' opener

Junior center Chad Wynn
scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds as East Carolina opened its 2009-10
basketball campaign with a 77-60 victory over NAIA member Virginia-Wise
Friday night in Greenville.
Sophomore forward Darrius
Morrow added 14 points, junior guard Brock Young had 12, junior guard
Jontae Sherrod contributed 10, and sophomore guard Chris Turner recorded
7 points and 10 rebounds in a game that was tied at 43 with less than 12
minutes remaining.
The Highland Cavaliers
(2-2) were led by sophomore guard Travis Berry (16 points) and senior
guard Pance Kecev (15 points), while sophomore forward Josh Jordan added
9 points and 10 rebounds.
With less than 8 minutes
left and East Carolina (1-0) clinging to a 52-51 lead, dunks by Morrow
and Turner set off a 25-9 run that put the game away and set the stage
for the Pirates to go into a Sunday matchup with Wake Forest on a
winning note.
Wake also opened its
season with a Friday night win on its home court, taking charge in the
game's early minutes and cruising to a 76-56 victory in Winston-Salem
over Oral Roberts.
The Pirates and Demon
Deacons will tip off Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum.
