Mustangs fend off East

East Carolina sliced away
most of a 12-point deficit in the middle of the second half before
Southern Methodist regrouped and outlasted the Pirates down the stretch
for a 59-54 Conference USA victory Wednesday night in Greenville.
Junior guard Brock Young
scored a game-high 14 points and junior forward Jamar Abrams added 10
for the Pirates, while senior guard Derek Williams had 13 points and
junior forward Papa Dia contributed 10 to lead the Mustangs.
Young made a pair of free
throws and a layup off a turnover to ignite a 10-0 run that reversed the
momentum SMU had held since the final minutes of the first half.
Back-to-back baskets by freshman guard Corvonn Gaines punctuated the ECU
surge that cut the Mustangs' margin to 46-44 with 7:42 left.
A pair of free throws by
Dia ended the Southern Methodist drought at the 7:27 mark and set the
stage for a close battle the rest of the way.
Abrams made a 3-pointer on
ECU's subsequent possession to close the gap to 1 but SMU senior forward
Mouhammad Faye countered with a trey to keep the Pirates at bay.
ECU made a final thrust
that came up short in the game's final minute. After Young converted
three free throws to cut the gap to 56-54 with 54 ticks left, Williams,
sophomore forward Robert Nyakundi and Faye each made free throws to seal
the win for the Mustangs.
SMU led at the half 26-20.
The Pirates will attempt
to bounce back on Saturday when they host daunting conference foe Tulsa
(19-8, 8-5 C-USA). The Golden Hurricane will pay a visit to Durham for a
Thursday night matchup with Duke (7 p.m., ESPN) before busing to
Greenville.
