Marshall leveraged hot
shooting from 3-point range to establish a lead, build on the
margin and maintain a cushion throughout in an 83-65 Conference USA
victory Saturday night in Greenville.
The Thundering Herd
compiled a 33-6 scoring advantage from behind the arc, gaining the lead
for good, 8-5, on a trey by sophomore guard Damier Pitts barely three
minutes into the contest and finishing off the bombardment when senior
guard Chris Lutz fired in a three with 8 seconds remaining.
The barrage took a bit of
the luster off a sparkling performance by East Carolina junior guard
Brock Young, who scored a game-high 26 points.
Pitts scored 17, Lutz
added 13 and freshman forward Hassan Whiteside and senior forward Tyler
Wilkerson each had 10 to lead Marshall.
Sophomore forward Darrius
Morrow contributed 15 points for the Pirates.
The Thundering Herd (13-2,
2-0 C-USA) was 11-of-23 from three-point range (47.8%), while East
Carolina (6-10, 0-2 C-USA) converted just 2-of-3 from behind the arc
(15.4%)
Marshall led at the half
40-32.
East Carolina faces
another imposing conference challenge Wednesday with a matchup against
Memphis at the FedEx Forum (8 p.m.) The Tigers (11-4, 1-0 C-USA)
extended their record winning streak in regular season league games to
50 Saturday night with a 59-57 road win over Southern Miss.
