Deja vu for Pirates

East Carolina (1-1)
charged back from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the game in
regulation, but for the second year in a row lost to Richmond (2-2) in
overtime Tuesday night in Greenville.
A three-point attempt by
ECU senior guard Darrell Jenkins missed the mark with seven seconds left
in the extra frame. The Spiders inherited possession when the ball went
out of bounds and held on for a 67-65 victory.
Richmond had gained the
lead for good on a three-pointer by freshman forward Justin Harper and a
pair of free throws by freshman guard Kevin Anderson.
ECU sophomore forward Gabe
Blair scored 19 points and led all rebounders with 12. Blair made 5 of
10 from the floor and converted 9 of 13 free throws in compiling the
double-double.
Junior guard James Legan,
a JC transfer, was the only other Pirate in double figures with 10
points in only 19 minutes.
Sophomore center Dan
Geriot's 22 points and 10 rebounds paced Richmond, which also got 15
points from senior forward Oumar Sylla.
After trailing throughout
the first half, ECU outscored the Spiders 23-4 coming out of
intermission to build a 10-point lead before the momentum swung back to
Richmond.
Last season, the Spiders
defeated the Pirates 71-67 in overtime in Richmond.
East Carolina will host
Liberty on
Saturday at 7 p.m.
