Heroic home finale for 'Captain Clutch'

Courtney Captain became Captain Clutch in his final home game, propelling East Carolina from start to finish and taking matters into his own hands when the outcome was in doubt to lift the Pirates over Texas-El Paso 79-78 Saturday night.

The only senior on a squad that had endured a 13-game losing streak, Captain poured in 29 points and bowed out of Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in ultimate style by nailing a three-pointer with 8.3 seconds left that gave ECU (6-21, 1-13 Conference USA) its first victory since Jan. 6 and its first league win of the season.

Junior guard Darrell Jenkins finished with 16 points and 9 assists and freshman forward John Fields added 15 points and 6 rebounds for the Pirates.

Guard Stefon Jackson scored 24 points to pace UTEP, which erased a 49-38 halftime deficit and took the lead 74-73 with 1:55 remaining on a jumper by Jackson. The Miners (14-14, 6-8) didn't trail again until Captain sank his game-winning trey from the wing.

Forward Dale Vanwright scored 17 points, forward Maurice Thomas contributed 13 points and guard Malik Alvin recorded 12 points for the Miners.

ECU, bedeviled much of the season by anemic shooting, finally found its touch at UTEP's expense. The Pirates shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the field, 45.8 percent (11-24) from three-point range and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the free throw line.

The Miners converted 41.8 percent (23-55) of their field goal attempts, 22.7 percent (5-22) from behind the arc and 81.8 percent (27-33) from the charity stripe.

The competition on the backboards was even, with each team registering 32 rebounds. UTEP won the turnovers battle, giving up the ball 14 times while the Pirates were coughing it up 18 times.

East Carolina closes out its regular season with road games versus Tulane (Wednesday, 8:05 p.m.) and Central Florida (Saturday, 7:00 p.m.)
