Wake bombards Pirates

From staff and electronic reports

Freshmen Anthony Gurley and Ishmael Smith were the lead instructors as Wake Forest put on a shooting clinic in an 81-65 victory over East Carolina Monday night in Winston-Salem.

Gurley and Ishmael each scored 15 points and displayed an accurate touch in all aspects of shooting to pace a Wake offensive effort that sent ECU (4-8) to its 7th straight loss.

The Demon Deacons (8-5) shot 57.1 percent from the field (28-49), making 54.5 percent of their three-point attempts (12-22) in the process. ECU hit 40.4 percent of its field goal tries (21-52), connecting on 33.3 percent of its three-point attempts (6-18).

Gurley was 5 of 7 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from three-point range, and made good on both of his foul line opportunities, while Ishmael converted 4 of 5 field goal attempts — 2 of 3 from behind the arc — and knocked down 5 of 7 free throws.

Sophomore Sam Hinnant scored 13 points and freshman James Dillard and junior Darrell Jenkins each contributed 12 for the Pirates.

Senior Kyle Visser added 14 points and freshman L.D. Williams recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for Wake (8-5), which won for the third time in its last four games.

The Deacs stretched a 40-30 halftime lead to as much as 25 points, 73-48, with a little less than six minutes remaining.

East Carolina returns to Greenville to host Chowan on Saturday (7 p.m.), then visits Tulsa on Wednesday, Jan. 10., to launch its 16-game Conference USA gauntlet.
