Pinkney gets starting QB nod
Bonesville.net Staff Report
©2003 Bonesville.net Redshirt freshman James Pinkney will start at
quarterback on Saturday for East Carolina when the Pirates take on South
Florida at homecoming, ECU coach John Thompson indicated on Thursday.
Desmond Robinson, who has started ECU’s nine previous games this season,
left a 41-24 loss at Memphis last Saturday with a sprained left ankle in the
second half and was replaced by Pinkney, who completed 9 of 16 passes for
109 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Robinson apparently will not be ready for the South Florida game after
missing practices this week.
Junior Paul Troth, who started in 2002, and Pinkney rotated with the first
two units in workouts this week and their performances were evaluated by the
coaching staff.
ECU coach John Thompson said Pinkney improved during the course of his
first varsity experience at Memphis.
“He did kind of smooth out and he got comfortable back there,” Thompson
said. “He’s got a real good arm and he’s been getting a lot of repetitions.”
Troth hasn’t played since coming in for Robinson and throwing 10 straight
incompletions in a 27-13 loss to Houston on Sept. 30. Troth was 177 of 359
for 2,315 yards with 15 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in 2002. He was
credited with 61 rushes for minus-210 yards as a sophomore.
Robinson is 133 for 201 for 1,262 yards with three TDs and 11
interceptions this season. In five games in 2003, Troth is 19 for 45 for 182
yards with no scores and two picks.
Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.
