Pirates slugging at torrid pace
From staff and wire reports
No. 17 East Carolina heads into its game at Duke today (7 p.m.,
LIVE AUDIO) as an offensive
juggernaut.
The Pirates hit 10 home runs in a three-game sweep of in-state
Conference USA rival Charlotte last weekend and lead the league with 48
round-trippers on the season.
Brothers Darryl and Trevor Lawhorn have hit home runs in the same
game four times this season and twice in the same inning. Darryl has hit
five homers in the last six games while Trevor has hit one home run in each
of the last four games.
The Pirates have homered 20 times in nine league games.
Senior Ryan Jones leads ECU's hitting attack, batting .429. Of
Jones' 36 hits on the season, 24 are extra-base hits, including 12 doubles,
three triples and nine home runs.
The Pirates have also benefited on occasion from solid pitching,
most recently from Greg Bunn. In his last two C-USA starts, the junior
right-hander has 19 strikeouts in 16 innings. Bunn has only allowed one
earned run on seven hits and walked one batter.
ECU posted a season-high 21 hits in the second game of the Charlotte
series and a season-high output of runs in a
24-13 bombardment of the 49ers in
the series finale. The last time, ECU scored 20 runs was February 2002 when
the Pirates defeated New York Tech, 20-8. The Pirates racked up 48 hits in
three games against the 49ers.
The contest against the Blue Devils will mark the end of an
eight-game road stretch for ECU, which will return home Friday to begin a
key three-game series against C-USA opponent South Florida.
