Only one Conference USA team has slugged more home runs this season than
Charlotte. That club happens to be rolling into the Queen City today for a
three-game series with the 49ers.
Charlotte hosts league rival East Carolina this weekend at Tom and Lib
Phillips Field. This evening's first pitch is scheduled for 6 pm. The other
two games in the series are Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Both teams enter the weekend
tied for sixth place in the conference
with identical 3-3 records. The 49ers have already played Saint Louis and
Tulane in C-USA action, while the Pirates have faced Tulane and Memphis.
Together, the two teams field six of C-USA's
top 12 home run hitters. ECU, ranked No. 18 by Baseball America with a 21-6
overall record, leads the conference with 38 round-trippers. Charlotte,
which has compiled a 13-9 record, is a close second with 36 homers.
The 49ers' Jamie Rusco leads the league's
individual home run race with 10, with teammates Thomas Bowker (7) and Brian
Scafe (6) tied for sixth and ninth, respectively.
ECU's Trevor Lawhorn is tied for second in
C-USA with 9 home runs, while Ryan Jones is fifth with 8 and Mark Minicozzi
is tied for ninth with 6.
Admission to each game of the series is $5 for adults, with all youths
17-and-under and Charlotte students with valid student IDs admitted free.
