It's enough to make one wonder if the voters in the Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll have full access to scores from games played east of I-95?
East Carolina, which after a productive week advanced in the rankings put
out by both of the venerable publication's counterparts, again failed to
crack the Top 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
ECU pulled out a 2-1 cliffhanger last Wednesday over then No. 12 North
Carolina before a record home crowd of 3,890, before closing out the week
with two wins in three chances over a solid South Florida club.
The Pirates climbed two rungs to 18th in the Baseball America rankings and
moved up from 23rd to 22nd in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.
UNC-CH benefiting from a three-game weekend sweep of ACC rival N.C. State
on the heels of its Wednesday loss to ECU hopped up three spots to 9th in
the Collegiate Baseball list, moved up to 19th from 21st in the Baseball
America rankings and from 25th to 23rd in the USA Today/ESPN poll.
Two of the ACC's more dominant teams are firmly entrenched in the higher reaches of the
rankings. Clemson held on to the top spot for the fourth week in a row,
despite a stretch during which four wins were somewhat dulled by a loss to
SEC neighbor South Carolina. Wake Forest reeled off five victories and
advanced to 3rd from 5th in the BaseballAmerica poll and to 3rd from 6th in
the USA Today/ESPN poll, while holding steady at 5th in the Collegiate
Baseball poll.
The win over the Tigers helped South Carolina in all three polls. The
Gamecocks were elevated three places to No. 5 by Baseball America and one
spot to 6th by both USA Today/ESPN and Collegiate Baseball.
ECU's fellow C-USA member, Houston, which was in the Top Ten on all three
lists last week, slipped a bit after losing a heartbreaker to cross-town
rival and 2nd-ranked Rice and dropping one of three games to league foe
Cincinnati. The Cougars were downgraded from 7th to 10th by Baseball
America, from 10th to 11th by USA Today/ESPN and from 10th to 12th by
Collegiate Baseball.
Meanwhile, C-USA member Louisville gained the attention of the Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper during a week in which the Pirates couldn't. The
Cardinals defeated Xavier and swept three games from league challenger
Charlotte and were rewarded with an entrance into the paper's rankings at
No. 29.
Louisville picked up seven votes in the USA Today/ESPN poll not nearly enough to
approach the Top 25 and a Carolinas team, CAA member UNC-Wilmington,
received six votes.
The new rankings were released Monday and are based on
results of games through Sunday, April 21.
